Colosseum Landslide
a short around the cliffs below the Hydro Majestic a few weeks ago intending to visit the historic Colosseum.
After descending the historic steps
and the old ladder
through both the keyholes
followed by the narrow ledges
and following the track around through the ferns,
we could see a massive landslip.
Up close it was clear that the track had totally disappeared
and what was 200m of vertical cliff was strewn across the tallus slope for well over 100m.
Presumably the recent rains had weighed down the porous sandstone to the point of no return.
The original track was obliterated, the rock and sand still unstable. In time a new track will be made that still hugs the cliff face. In the short term, I’d expect walkers to descend to a safer place to cross the debris and reascend somewhere around the corner.
We traced our steps that day.
The lower route the the Colosseum across the tallus slope that starts at the sign by the 2nd keyhole would remain unchanged.
